The first step in any dental emergency is to call Hawaiian Island Dental at (808) 245-8866 and tell us what you're experiencing. If you are an out-of-town visitor to Lihue, Kapa’a, or Koloa, we would be happy to help you get the urgent dental care you need.

Tips for Handling Dental Emergencies

Jaw Pain or Swelling

Jaw pain or swelling can indicate that you have a root canal inflammation, infection, or abscess. It's crucial to seek treatment right away, so call our emergency dentist first. You can control pain and swelling by using an ice pack on and off your face for 20-minute intervals and taking over-the-counter pain medications if necessary.

Toothache

A toothache is a common dental problem that can indicate a serious problem. Prompt treatment is crucial to eliminate your pain and prevent further damage to the tooth.

Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or Advil can be very effective for short-term relief. Also, placing an ice pack on your face in the painful area can help minimize pain and reduce swelling. However, even if the pain goes away for a time, it can come back worse if we don't fill the tooth as soon as possible.

Broken Tooth

If you can find the broken tooth pieces, place them in a tissue or other safe place and bring them with you to your appointment. If the tooth has jagged edges, try covering them with a bit of sugarless gum or dental wax.

Lost Filling or Dental Crown

A lost filling will need to be replaced, but we may be able to place the dental crown back on your tooth if there's no tooth decay. Gather up the crown or pieces of filling, and bring them to your emergency dental appointment.

Dental Injury

Dental trauma, including a knocked-out tooth, can occur due to a sports injury or an accident. Prompt treatment is the key to providing the most successful outcome, so call us immediately and let us know what’s happening.

If you have a knocked-out tooth, hold it by the chewing surface only and don't touch the root. Place the tooth it in your cheek pocket or a cup of saliva or milk until you get to our office.

If you are bleeding heavily or the injury includes trauma to your face or jaw, call 911 or go to the emergency room.
