Dental Crowns & Bridges

Did you know that tooth enamel is the strongest substance in the human body? It's true—our teeth are designed to be very strong and stand up well to daily wear and tear. However, today we live longer than ever before, and with the extra demand on our teeth, sometimes they break down.

If you do break or crack a tooth or have a cavity that's too large for a filling, Dr. Jaurequi offers dental crowns so you can smile confidently and chew on the tooth again.

Some reasons why Dr. Jaurequi would recommend a crown are:

  • A tooth has already been filled multiple times
  • A tooth is broken or cracked and needs support
  • A tooth has had a root canal and needs protection

We also use dental crowns to hold a bridge in place and to restore a dental implant.

Dental Bridges Replace Missing Teeth

Anyone can experience tooth loss, but fortunately, we have options like dental bridges to replace missing teeth and give you back your smile. A dental bridge is a good choice when one or two teeth in a row are missing.

Dr. Jaurequi custom designs your bridge with an artificial tooth to fill the gap in your smile. The bridge is then held in place by crowns attached to adjacent teeth.

What to Expect When Getting Crowns and Bridges

Crowns and bridges are both dental restorations, and the process for getting them is similar. First, Dr. Jaurequi prepares the teeth by removing a layer of dental enamel, so the crown or bridge sits naturally along the gumline.

Next, he uses advanced technology to take impressions of your teeth without messy paste. A custom dental lab uses the impressions to customize your crown or bridge.

When it’s ready, you return to Hawaiian Islands Dental to have the crown or bridge adjusted to fit comfortably and cemented securely on your tooth.

Get the Most out of Your Crown or Bridge

A dental crown or bridge can’t get a cavity, but the tooth underneath it can. Practice excellent oral hygiene at home, and ask us to show you how to brush and floss properly if your skills are a little rusty. Book exams and teeth cleanings at Hawaiian Islands Dental every six months or as recommended by our dentist and hygienist.

Following these steps helps you get as much use out of it as possible. With proper care, crowns and bridges can last ten years or longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental work like crowns, fillings, and bridges made of quality materials and placed by an experienced dentist like Dr. Jaurequi are strong and durable. Unfortunately, there are so many variables that affect the lifespan of your restorations that it's impossible to say how long they'll last in your case.

Generally speaking, composite tooth fillings last about seven years, dental crowns can last anywhere between 10-30 years, and a dental implant can potentially last a lifetime. However, once we place the restoration in your mouth, its lifespan depends on how well you care for it and your oral health.

How to Care for Crowns and Fillings

You can take several steps if you want to keep your dental work in good shape for as long as possible.

Practice Excellent Oral Hygiene

Brushing and flossing conscientiously are the most important things you can do to protect your oral health. You should brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss your teeth once.

Aren’t sure about your hygiene skills? Ask our friendly dental hygienist, and she will be happy to demonstrate the proper techniques.

Schedule Regular Exams and Teeth Cleanings

Seeing us every six months for exams and teeth cleanings is the easiest way to keep your dental work and your oral health in good shape. During these appointments, Dr. Jaurequi and our hygienist can look for signs of cavities and gum disease.

Finding and treating both as soon as possible is the best way to keep your smile healthy. At every exam, they will also check the condition of your existing crowns, bridges, and tooth fillings to make sure they’re in good shape.
