How can we help you?
Here at Hawaiian Island Dental, we always welcome and encourage our patients' questions. There's a lot involved with achieving and maintaining a healthy smile, and we'll provide the information and support you need to make it easy and convenient.
Please take a look through some of the questions that we hear most often from our patients. If you have other questions, don't hesitate to call or email us so we can help you find the answers you need.
Dental Crowns & Bridges
Dental work like crowns, fillings, and bridges made of quality materials and placed by an experienced dentist like Dr. Jaurequi are strong and durable. Unfortunately, there are so many variables that affect the lifespan of your restorations that it's impossible to say how long they'll last in your case.
Generally speaking, composite tooth fillings last about seven years, dental crowns can last anywhere between 10-30 years, and a dental implant can potentially last a lifetime. However, once we place the restoration in your mouth, its lifespan depends on how well you care for it and your oral health.
How to Care for Crowns and Fillings
You can take several steps if you want to keep your dental work in good shape for as long as possible.
Practice Excellent Oral Hygiene
Brushing and flossing conscientiously are the most important things you can do to protect your oral health. You should brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss your teeth once.
Aren’t sure about your hygiene skills? Ask our friendly dental hygienist, and she will be happy to demonstrate the proper techniques.
Schedule Regular Exams and Teeth Cleanings
Seeing us every six months for exams and teeth cleanings is the easiest way to keep your dental work and your oral health in good shape. During these appointments, Dr. Jaurequi and our hygienist can look for signs of cavities and gum disease.
Finding and treating both as soon as possible is the best way to keep your smile healthy. At every exam, they will also check the condition of your existing crowns, bridges, and tooth fillings to make sure they’re in good shape.

Approximate Times for Procedures
Your dental needs are unique, so it's not possible to say exactly how long your procedure will take until we see you; however, this is how much time we typically reserve for procedures:
- Dental exam with cleaning and x-rays: 45 minutes
- Dental crowns, including prep: 1.5 hours
- Dental crown placement: 30 minutes
- Basic tooth fillings: 1 hour
We provide these as a guide, but your appointment for a similar service may take shorter or longer depending on how complex your needs are. When Dr. Jaurequi sees you for your initial appointment, he can give you a more accurate idea of how long you should allow for your appointment.

When you experience tooth loss, your appearance, comfort, and confidence all suffer. Eating all the foods you love can be painful, and it may be challenging to form certain words when you speak. There’s a noticeable gap in your smile, and your confidence level falls.
Replace Missing Teeth with Dental Implants
At Hawaiian Island Dental, Dr. Jaurequi places and restores dental implants to help you get back your smile and quality of life. A dental implant is a titanium tooth root restored with a dental crown and looks, acts, and functions like a natural tooth.
Dr. Jaurequi places the implant in your jawbone during an in-office procedure that takes about an hour. As bone and tissue heal around the artificial root, it starts to act like a real tooth root to keep your jawbone healthy and prevent bone loss. Eventually, the implant becomes a permanent part of your dental anatomy, just as your natural tooth root was.
A Complete Tooth Replacement
When we attach the dental crown to the implant, you have a complete tooth replacement, from the root in your jaw to the crown that shows when you smile. If you stay current with six-month dental cleanings and brush and floss conscientiously, your implant could last a lifetime.
Is a Dental Implant Right for You?
Many people are good candidates for dental implant placement, and the first place to start is to schedule an appointment with Dr. Jaurequi. Using leading-edge technology, he can determine if an implant is right for you or if you’re better suited to a dental bridge or partial denture.
If you're ready to learn more about tooth implants, please call our Lihue dental office to schedule an appointment.
Your comfort is crucial to us at Hawaiian Island Dental! We understand your concerns and will do everything to ensure that you have a pain-free, stress-free procedure.
Experience counts for a lot in dentistry, and Dr. Jaurequi has been practicing for over 25 years. He is very gentle when delivering your anesthesia and will ensure that you don't feel any discomfort during your procedure. Once your tooth is numb, you shouldn’t feel anything except for some light pressure.
Nitrous Oxide to Soothe Your Anxiety
We are also pleased to offer nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, to help you relax through your treatment. Nitrous oxide is perfectly safe and strong enough to produce pleasant effects but so mild that it's safe to use for children.
With nitrous, you’ll remain fully awake and won’t go to sleep during your procedure. However, you’ll feel very drowsy and dreamy, and the sights and sounds around you will fade into the background.
Our busy patients really appreciate that using nitrous has no lingering drowsy side effects. They can have their treatment, then go back to their usual daily routine.
